The initial text was written by Weinert in 1927. It was distributed for the first time in 1930 in the form of a disk edited by the publishing house Arbeiter-Kult; Weinert himself recites the text on a melody composed by Wladimir Vogel. After, came out a version accompanied with a composition by Hanns Eisler, published as a supplement to Kampfmusik 1/1931. Eisler set the text to music a second time in 1938, sung by Ernst Busch. The latter included the song, with some variations, in the collection Spanienliederbuch [Book of songs from Spain], under the title "Workers, Peasants". This collection, edited by Busch, first was published in April 1937 under the title Kampflieder der Internationalen Brigaden [Combat songs of the International Brigades]; it was modified and expanded on various occasions, later it was entitled also Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales (in Spain, as it is). |
