The song was created at the end of 1934. It was officially presented the first time in 1935 by Ernst Busch, in the course of the 1st International Olympiad for workers music and song, organized by the International Music Office, established in Moscow. The song appears in the collection Spanienliederbuch [Book of songs from Spain]. This collection, edited by Busch, first was published in April 1937 under the title Kampflieder der Internationalen Brigaden [Combat songs of the International Brigades]; it was modified and expanded on various occasions, later it was entitled also Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales (in Spain, as it is).
